Pepa Rosado falleció el pasado día 14

Vimos por primera vez a Pepa en ese maravilloso rincón madrileño denominado La Corrala y pudimos descubrir a una gran actriz que dominaba el escenario. Después, la disfrutamos en algunas obras de teatro que con su maestría bordaba sobre las tablas. Pero nuestros más gratos recuerdos nos llevan a sus actuaciones en el coliseo de la Zarzuela representando La revoltosa, Curro Vargas, La chulapona, Don Gil de Alcalá, Gigantes y cabezudos y por última vez, en el 2008, La leyenda del beso junto al resto de su familia, conservando sus grandes dotes aunque, en esta última ocasión, con alguna limitación física.

Pepa fue el baluarte de toda una saga de grandes actores y cantantes, junto a su esposo Rafael Castejón, sus hijos Jesús, Rafa(el) y su hija Nuria coreógrafa y últimamente con su nieto Ariel, hijo de Nuria. Todos ellos figuras importantes de la escena y en particular del teatro lírico. Pepa también llevaba el apellido Gorgé, pues estaba emparentada con otra gran voz de la lírica el barítono-bajo Pablo Gorgé, tal como nos explicaba Jesús Castejón (hijo) en la entrevista que le hicimos en el año 2004. Toda una historia lírica a su alrededor que quizás deba ser escrita algún día.

Esta gran actriz madrileña que empezó su carrera bailando en el Teatro de La Latina, hizo grandes a los personajes que representó, en especial a aquellas mujeres tan abundantes en el teatro español y en la zarzuela, llenas de personalidad, fuerza, chispa, coraje… aunque en el fondo personajes sensibles. Otro pilar de nuestro teatro que ha dado un nuevo paso y que se coloca en el olimpo de aquellos que dieron su vida por la Zarzuela y que esté donde esté, seguirá vigilante para que la Zarzuela no cese en su lucha, como ella siempre hizo.

Hace unos años, en una actuación en un pueblo cercano a Madrid, hablamos con Pepa y recordamos algunos de los innumerables hitos de su carrera, en particular su etapa en el Teatro Calderón donde destacaron sus actuaciones y donde también hubo sus “sombras” por el comportamiento de otros.

Toda una gran persona, esposa y madre que todos debemos tener en nuestra mente para recordar aquellos personajes que de forma tan inconfundible dejó en nuestra memoria. ¿Será este el año en que el Teatro de La Zarzuela organice un concierto que, anualmente, sirva de homenaje a estas grandes figuras que se van alejando, momentáneamente, de nosotros?

February 14th: Pepa Rosado dies

I first saw Pepa in that wonderful corner of Madrid called La Corrala, and immediately knew I was watching a fine actress who dominated the stage. After which I was able to enjoy her work in many performances where she demonstrated her remarkable stage talent. But my fondest memories take me back to her performances at the temple of La Zarzuela (Teatro de la Zarzuela) where she took part in La revoltosa, Curro Vargas, La chulapona, Don Gil de Alcalá, Gigantes y cabezudos and (her final appearance) La leyenda del beso in 2008, with the rest her family, her great gift still in evidence, despite on this occasion some physical limitations.

Pepa was the mainstay of a whole family of great actors and singers, with her husband Rafael Castejón, their children Jesús, Rafa(el) and her choreographer-daughter Nuria; and lately with her grandson Ariel, Nuria’s son. All are major figures on the stage, and especially in the lyric theatre. Not only that, but Pepa could boast maternal connections  with the Gorgé surname, and so was related to another great zarzuela voice - bass Paul Gorgé, as Pepa’s son Jesús explained in an interview for zarzuela.net in 2004. All of which makes for a history of lyric theatre that perhaps should one day be written down.

This fine Madrid actress, who began her career as a dancer at the Teatro de La Latina, made the characters she played marvellously vivid, especially those powerful women so common in Spanish zarzuela, full of personality, strength, truculence, courage... whilst yet often remaining deeply sensitive souls. Another pillar of Spanish theatre has moved on, to stand in the pantheon of those who dedicated their lives to zarzuela, and whatever they were doing, stayed alert for the good of the genre, without cease: this she always did.

A few years ago, at a show in a village close to Madrid, I spoke to Pepa and heard her recall some of the many milestones in her career, including her time at the Teatro Calderón where she talked about her performances, while remembering some “shady” behaviour by a colleague.

All in all, she was a substantial person, wife and mother that we all have in our mind as we remember those characters she played so distinctively. Will this be the year the Teatro de la Zarzuela finally institutes an annual concert as a tribute to these great figures who are moving away from us, one by one?
