Ha fallecido el Maestro José Perera
Hace unos años le entrevistamos para nuestra página web y al final nos preguntábamos “¿Habrá una nueva ocasión para seguir escuchando al Maestro?”. Así fue, en repetidas ocasiones pudimos hablar de nuevo con él, aunque en las últimas veces su mente vagaba por los recuerdos.
Dos de sus sueños fueron, por un lado sus coros y por el otro el football.
Todo el mundo reconoce al Maestro (siempre con mayúscula) como el gran creador y director de coros, desde aquel coro infantil en el que formaban parte varios miembros de su familia, hasta sus dos grandes creaciones, el Coro Cantores de Madrid y el Coro Titular del Teatro de La Zarzuela. Pero no todo el mundo sabe que el Maestro había llegado hace unos meses a ser el socio nº 1 del club de toda la vida, el Atlético de Madrid, cuyo viejo y derruido estadio estaba muy próximo a donde vivía.
¡Cómo se indignaba el Maestro cuando se presentaba un disco y se mencionaba a los cantantes, a la orquesta, a la casa discográfica…. y se olvidaba a los coros y a su director!
Sobra el hablar de la capacidad, del esfuerzo, de la profesionalidad, de su amor por la zarzuela…. Los cientos de personas que han pasado por sus coros, entre ellos nombres muy importantes de nuestro teatro lírico, lo certifican.
Recordamos que tiempo después de publicar su entrevista nos pidió que cambiásemos una de las fotos incluidas en la misma, aquella en la que salía con un gesto extraño. Hoy cumplimos su deseo y reemplazamos la foto. El Maestro, gran amante de la zarzuela, nos vigila a partir hoy desde esa atalaya que le permitirá observar lo que somos capaces de hacer por nuestro teatro lírico. Él será feliz viendo a “su zarzuela” sobrevivir para que muchos sigan vibrando con sus notas recordando a su Maestro, a ese Maestro que tanto hizo por ella.
El Club Atlético de Madrid ha invitado a la familia a asistir al palco de su estadio el próximo domingo, para recibir el cariño de las decenas de miles de aficionados al ser recordado por la megafonía del estadio. Esperamos que las autoridades musicales y el Teatro de La Zarzuela estén a la altura de las deportivas y le hagan el homenaje que se merece.

Obituary: Maestro José Perera
When I interviewed him for our website a few years ago, I finally asked him, “will there be another opportunity to continue talking with the Maestro?” I certainly was able to talk to him again several times, but recently his mind wandered a little.
Two of his daydreams were – on one side, about his choruses; and on the other, about football.
Everyone recognizes the Maestro (always capitalized) as the great founder and director of choruses, from the children’s choir which included several members of his family, to his two greatest formations – Coro Cantores de Madrid and Coro Titular del Teatro de La Zarzuela. But not everyone knows that the Maestro became a few months ago the No.1 Honorary Member of his lifelong club Atlético Madrid, whose old and dilapidated stadium was very close to where he lived.
How indignant the Master was when one presented a disc, mentioning the singers, the orchestra, the record company… but forgetting the chorus and its director! It’s needless to speak of his ability, work-rate, professionalism – his complete love of zarzuela. The hundreds of people who passed through his choruses include many important names of Spanish lyric theatre, for certain.
I remember that after publishing his interview he asked us to change one of the photos we included, one in which he had a strange expression. Today we fulfil his desire and replace that photo. The Maestro, that great lover of zarzuela, watches us today from that vantage point that allows everyone to see what we are doing for lyric theatre. He will be happy to see “his zarzuela” survive for so many who still thrill to his recordings, this Maestro who did so much for the art.
Atlético Madrid Club have invited the family to sit in the box of their stadium next Sunday, to receive (following a PA announcement) acclamation and love from the tens of thousands of fans who remember him well. We hope that the musical powers-that-be and the Teatro de La Zarzuela match this great sporting tribute and give him the homage he deserves.
